Robin Schellenberg was at The Black Mountain last Saturday. At Mensch Meier in Berlin the DJ, music producer and label manager played one hour of Melodic Techno. He releases the recording on trndmsk.
How did the gig come about?
Robin Schellenberg: I know Baba The Knife for quite a long time. We talked some day about his new project The Black Mountain and then the idea popped up, that my sound would fit in very well. I wrote them a mail, they liked it.
What can we look forward to in the next few minutes?
My understanding of Melodic Techno, around 126 BPM.
How did you choose the tracks? Did you make a plan before the gig?
I play in my sets a lot of new songs. I like it to be surprised by new stuff you heard 2 – 3 times before you play it. And of course i have some older tracks i really admire and mix them in. I have an idea of what i want to create in the set, and in best case everything works out and just flows in the right way.
Do you have a favorite track included in the mix?
Hard to say. I build my sets mostly in a rising way. There are different scenes (or feelings) in it, and mostly it gets faster by the time. I really like Toto Chiavetta’s tracks, he has such a crazy sound design approach. In this mix i like Santiago Garcia’s remix for “Opus” from Coeus. I literally found this track one day before the set and totally fell in love with it.
What three songs do you tend to use in your current sets?
I don’t have tracks that i play in every set.
What are your near future projects? Are you working on any other projects?
Just two days ago my current release “Hung Over” for Kamai Music with Vruno was premiered by Afterhour Sounds. In July I have two releases coming up: with my studiobrother Daniele Di Martino at Chapter24 Records, and another one with Vruno on Traum Schallplatten. I am really looking forward to those.
Summer is just around the corner. Which open airs are you most looking forward to?
Bucht der Traeumer Festival. Fell in love with it last year. Feels like coming home.
