Electronic dance music, melodic house or techno – simply sorting Paji into one of these genres would not do justice to his musical uniqueness. Since his first EP, released in 2013, he created unmistakable listening experiences from a symbiosis of classical and traditional instruments as well as synth- or DAW-generated electronic sounds.
Now, in 2019, things have changed, been stirred up and the contemporary dancefloor is not necessarily the main point of reference anymore. Paji’s album released on Katermukke goes beyond anything he’s ever done, sports different influences and – especially in tunes like „Oraman“ – pays homage to his musical upbringing rather than referencing the next peak-time sensation.
It’s no coincidence that the album bears his name “Paji“: titles like „Intoku“ lead the listeners to his oriental roots. On the other hand, Paji shows his musical cosmopolitanism and love for contemporary, melodious dance music in „Wild Flowers“ and „Virtue“. A special highlight is the collaboration with his long-time friends and companions Tube&Berger, which resulted in a mystical groovy track : „Raw Water“.
With the Outro „Yggdrasil“, which means as much as „world tree“ or „where everything comes together“, the musical circle closes and the album finishes, as it began – with an audible and perceptible journey into Paji ́s world of colorful music.
It’s evident that this album brings more to the table than just computer generated loops catering to the most basic needs of what makes electronic dance music floor functional.
Each track is a thought out composition in its own right; all eleven of them combined can make up as a single masterpiece debut perfectly defining Paji’s distinct style and approach to create music that’s suitable for the club environments, car rides, sofa listening sessions as well as, strolls in the nature.
trndmsk: How long did it take you to produce the album?
Paji: It took me about one year. I moved to Berlin last summer and started right away.
How did you choose the title of the LP? Is there a special meaning behind it?
It was an easy decision to name the album after myself, simply because it is me! My various traditional and modern influences, my love for classical music, my life in Berlin, my friends and family and all the other things that make me who I am.
What inspired you to produce the tracks and the LP?
It was more a decision to produce an LP than an inspiration. I did many EPs or singles before and always had to think for the dancefloors. The tracks were all in between 118 and 124 bpm and somehow produced for the dancefloor. I wanted to break out to be musically free and just create music that I like. So the idea of an album came up. I was inspired by many things throughout this year of process. Places, people, good music.
Where and how did you produce the tracks?
I produced them all in my studio in Berlin. Some of them I started at home just playing instruments and searching new melodies to record them later in the studio. I used many instruments outside the box but also DAW generated sounds. For me it doesn’t matter how a sound is created. If it’s a good sample and it works, fine. If it’s a software synthesizer and it works, good! But sometimes the organic sound of a real instrument is not replaceable with any synthesizer or computer. The emotion you can create is just different. And this is what I love in the combination with real instruments and electronic produced sounds.
How did the collaborations come about?
Tube & Berger are my friends since a long time. I released my first releases on their imprint and they supported me from day one. We had a collaboration together on their debut album in 2012 as well. So it was clear to me that I want them on my Album!
I produced the track ‘Seaside’ together with Thomasiom. He is an amazing musician. We met coincidentally and talked about music. He plays the Violin, Viola, Guitar, Piano, Oud, Bouzuki just to name a few. He is also a great composer and producer. It is an honor to have him on my debut album.
When I heard Wonderful Bones vocal for the first time, I knew directly that I want to work with him in the studio. He is a songwriter and comes from a different genre. So we had to find a way to go in the studio. It took us hours and hours, but in the end we did 2 tracks together!! I moved to Berlin in 2018. I didn’t knew Namito personally but of course I knew his music. A friend of us connected us and we met in my studio and started to work on the track ‘Intoku’. We already started some more tracks together and I’m happy to release them soon.
How was the feedback so far?
I’m really overwhelmed from the feedback so far. I’m really happy with the result myself and when I see how people react when they listen to it the very first time, it makes me even happier! Can’t wait to play the tracks in my new live set.
Why did you choose Katermukke?
Katermukke supported me since my first live set at the Katerholzig in 2013. It was one of my first live sets and I still remember the crowd and the energy. It was a Katermukke showcase. Later I released an EP and another track for their 150th release. Velten (Dirty Doering) asked me if I want to do an album in the future and if so I should let him know. I’m really happy to release my album on his imprint. I was completely free in the whole musical process for my album which is very important for me.
What’s up next after the release? Any plans and projects?
My Album Tour will start soon. I’m really excited to play my new live set. I’m working on that most of the time now. I also want to include visuals and my whole setup will change. I’m also back in the studio to collect ideas for the next releases.
